Observations

  • Every side has lost at least 2 first team players from last season, although for the five teams at the top of this list that’s where it stopped. Across the four professional divisions only Manchester United gave more players regular first team football than the 18 used by Preston.
  • Of the clubs relegated from the Championship only Peterborough have been able to keep the majority of last season’s squad together. This continuity could well give them an edge in the promotion race – fellow relegatees Wolves who look set to fall further down this list as their transfer-listed high earners move on.
  • Notts County and Brentford stand out as having relied on a small core of players last season – their managers were either unwilling or unable to rotate resulting in over 75% of possible minutes being racked up by the same 11 players.
  • The extent of Swindon’s post-Di Canio cutbacks are laid bare here: two thirds of last season’s core players have departed to leave a team that’s barely recognisable from this time last year.
