Ahead of the World Cup we’ve collected a unique dataset from match footage of every single one of the 993 goals scored and conceded by the 32 World Cup finalists across the 352 qualifying matches they collectively played in. These totals include all of Brazil’s international games in 2013 (given that they didn’t need to qualify). We’ve used this data to build up an assessment of their relative strengths, weaknesses and playing style to power a range of analyses which we’ll share on the site as they’re released.

This simple tool lets you rank each of the teams by the goals they scored and conceded in a variety of different ways. You can quickly switch between measures using the menu at the top and the teams will automatically sort themselves. To make it easier to track one or more teams in this visualisation, just click to highlight them and they will stay highlighted as you switch between different measures.
